Tonbridge won the 2008 Halford Hewitt golf tournament at Royal Cinque Ports GC yesterday, beating Malvern 4-1 in a closer final than that score suggests. Malvern gave us a few frights on the back nine and, after winning the top two matches, our third pair were going down the nineteenth and our fifth one down on the 18th tee, when Johnny Hubbard in our fourth pair sank the vital putt on the 18th to win his match 1 up. He and his partner, Brian Ingleby, had been four up, so the possibility of being taken to extra holes probably didn't appeal greatly.
This was the first win in the Hewitt for Captain, Nick Kemp, whose team was:
Geoff Clay and George Taggart, John Spurling and James Horn, Ed Richardson and Colin Jones, Johnny Hubbard and Brian Ingleby, Richard Partridge and Christo Lloyd.
